General information and objectives
COL's three main objectives are:1. Study and research opportunities and international contacts for swiss students and scientists.
2. Support for students who would like to enroll in oceanographic and limnological courses.
3. Public Relations through its website and symposia.
COL also serves as the Scientific Committee of Oceanic Research SCOR and its members are represented in international oceanographic bodies of experts.
Historic Overview
Since the beginning swiss scientists from different disciplines were involved in aquatic sciences.
1882-1972 Access for swiss scientists and students to marine stations was granted by the formation of the 'Federal commission for the zoological station in Naples und the biological station in Roscoff' by the Federal Department of Interior.
1972: Formation of the interdisciplinary 'Commission for Oceanography and Limnology' of today's Swiss National Academy of Sciences after a suggestion by Prof. A. Portmann 1970.
Mid-1970's shift of scientific interest: from marine organisms to the ocean's role in Earth's system. Increasing involvement in international science programmes by swiss geologists, physicists and chemists.
