General information and objectives
The WMO is developing WHYCOS together with the World Bank and other agencies as a long-term initiative to improve knowledge of the hydrological cycle. WHYCOS will consist initially of about 1,000 stations world-wide sited on major rivers. Each station will measure approximately 15 variables (e.g., flow, load, water chemistry and on-bank meteorological variables). Many of these stations already exist is the developed world. The concept is being developed initially for Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea and the Aral Sea basin.WHYCOS will contribute data to the Global Climate Observing System and other monitoring networks as necessary.
