General information and objectives

Among the regions of the world, South Asia is one of the most sensitive to global climate change, population growth, and rapid industrialization/urbanization. The region depends heavily on the variable regional monsoon as well as water derived from glacial melt in the Himalayas; both of these are affected by climatic change. Critical concerns in the South Asia region include food and water security, air quality, sustainable development, and vulnerability to impacts of climate change.

Mission and Objectives of SAS-RC:
  • To promote regional cooperation in global change research within the South Asia region and develop coherence and greater efficency among global, regonnal and national research agendas.
  • To enhande the exchange of data and the communication of research results.
  • To provide scientific information to the public and inputs to policy making bodies in South Asia.
  • To support capacity building efforts within the region by identification and involvement of young scientists.

Main thematic research interests iclude:
  • land use change and its impact on terrestrial ecosystem
  • regional climate change and variability
  • change in atmospheric composition and its impact
  • costal zones, land-ocean interactions and international waters
  • adaption and vulnerability to global change

Some of the major projects include:
  • water ressources in South Asia
  • global change and Himalayan Mountains
  • urbanisation and industrial transformation in mega cities
  • CLIMAG
  • post-INDOEX activities
