General information and objectives

The ODP is an international partnership in the field of geological oceanography. Recent cruises have focussed on changes in the global environment, mantle-crust interactions, fluid circulation in the ocean crust; global geochemical budgets and stress/deformation of the lithosphere.

The ODP in its present form came into being in 1983, when Texas A&M University was designated as the science operator, but the program has a long history. Drilling operations begain in 1968 under the leadership of JOIDES (the Joint Oceanographic Institutions for Deep Earth Sampling) and the program became international in 1975. Switzerland – as one of the 12 members of the European Science Foundation Consortium for Ocean Drilling (ECOD) – became involved in 19XX. The Scientific Office of ECOD is the ESCO (ESF Scientific Committee for ODP) Secretariat, which is currently located at the Geological Institute, ETH Zürich
The selection of drilling sites is proposal-driven.
